Understand how the Mais Médicos program is strengthening healthcare in Brazil, with 95% of vacancies filled by professionals trained in the country and the growing participation of quota holders
The Mais Médicos program, which has reached its 38th cycle, continues to expand access to healthcare in Brazil, filling 95% of new vacancies with professionals trained in the country. In total, 3,177 vacancies were offered, and the program received more than 33 thousand applications, standing out as an important initiative to cover vulnerable areas and areas with healthcare gaps.
The Role of the Program in Brazilian Healthcare
Launched to strengthen primary care and fill gaps in underserved regions, the Mais Médicos program evolves with each cycle. The new call for applications had a strong response from doctors trained in Brazil, with 95% of vacancies filled by professionals registered with the Regional Council of Medicine (CRM). This number represents a significant increase, since the previous cycle had only 84.7% of doctors with CRM in the country.
Profile of Selected Professionals
The program also stood out for its inclusion of quota candidates. Approximately 9.3% of applications were submitted by candidates enrolled in the quota system, with 12.4% of these vacancies being reserved for people with disabilities. Female participation in the program was significant, with 56.9% of applications made by women.
Another relevant factor is self-declaration of race and color. Of those selected, 42.2% identify as black, showing an advance in the program’s diversity. In addition, the sexual orientation item was analyzed for the first time, reflecting a more inclusive and representative approach.
Geographic Distribution of Professionals
The selected professionals will be distributed throughout all regions of Brazil, with emphasis on the Northeast, which will receive 34.7% of the total number of doctors, followed by the Southeast (26.9%) and South (21%) regions. States such as São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and Bahia are among those that will receive the most professionals.
Improvements and Incentives
Since the resumption of Mais Médicos in 2023, the federal government has invested in improving the working conditions and qualifications of professionals. Now, in addition to working in vulnerable regions, doctors have the opportunity to pursue specializations and even master’s degrees through the National Strategy for Training Health Specialists. This incentive reflects the ongoing commitment to improving public health and developing professionals qualified to work in the Unified Health System (SUS).
